Sack Paper
Sack Paper
- Segezha Group is the world’s fourth-largest manufacturer of unbleached sack paper which competes on equal footing with the produce of the world market leaders and is exported to almost 60 countries of the world.
- Sack paper is manufactured by Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill (Segezha city, Republic of Karelia) from unbleached craft pulp. The pulp is manufactured from the wood of Northern coniferous species. Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill offers the whole range of brown sack papers. Such paper is the most common packaging material and is widely used for the production of paper sacks, bags, wrappings, envelopes, etc.
- The paper has unique tensile strength. Its porosity, or air permeability, makes it even more durable. Porosity is essential for tensile energy absorption; its value is determined by laboratory testing as time required for passing of 100 ml air through a circle of 28.7 mm in diameter.
- In order to decrease moisture absorption, paper is subjected to stock sizing. Wet strength is facilitated by addition of moisture-resistant resins. They allow the paper to retain 20 to 30% of its initial strength after complete soaking in water.

PULP AND PAPER MILL MODERNIZATION
Paper machine BDM-11 has been supplied under a contract with Voith Concern which is the world leading paper and pulp industry equipment manufacturer. The cost of the equipment exceeds EUR 80 million. The last launch of such powerful equipment took place back in the Soviet times. The launch of BDM-11 will allow Segezha Group to boost its sack paper manufacturing capacity by one-third.
The launch of the new BDM-11 will increase the share of high-porosity and at the same time strong papers in the Company’s portfolio. These types of paper will make it possible to make lighter paper bags with less paper layers in them. Such paper bags will provide for the product’s transport safety and null dusting, and will possess a number of other outstanding qualities.

Specification of sack paper manufactured by Segezha Group:
- Roll width: 650 to 2000mm
- Roll diameter: 800 to 1200 mm
- Inner tube diameter: 76 or 102 mm.
The paper is used for the production of paper wrappers suitable for carrying small weights, such as retailer bags with handles, charcoal or pet litter bags, etc.

Modernization of cement plants tightens the customers’ requirements towards filling equipment. As a rule, these are state-of-the-art carousel type filling tools outfitted with up to ten nozzles feeding the construction materials to paper bags.
Filling a paper bag with 50 kg cement takes up to 4 seconds. Such high-tech industry requires high-porosity paper wrappers. It is the high air permeability that allows the bags made of mere 2 or 3 paper layers to hold as much as fifty kilograms of cement.

- Sack paper is ideal for manufacturing of industrial bags for cement, dry mortars and other products answering to strict tensile strength standards.
- The use of high-porosity papers provides for good air permeability of the bag and does not require any additional perforation. This means, primarily, that the manufacturing of the bags themselves will require one operation less, and secondarily that the environmental burden pertaining to the loading and unloading of such bags will decrease.
- Paper porosity allows for “breathing” of the product and preserves its quality under fluctuating temperature and humidity conditions.
- The paper’s enhanced durability and air permeability is especially important for valve bags, because such bag has to retain its durability and to be sufficiently hard to hold the contents, at the same time letting air out.
